Story
Sonic has established himself in Green Hills and made himself a hero to Tom and Maddie Wachowski (James Marsden and Tika Sumpter), but his heroic streak is tested when Dr. Robotnik (Idris Elba) returns with Knuckles the echidna as his sidekick to search for an ancient Master Emerald.
The pursuit of the Emerald is an epic quest, and Sonic and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessy) join forces to assist him along the way. Unfortunately, Robotnik’s plans for world dominance aren’t far behind either.
After a series of intense battles, the Egg Smasher finally reaches its zenith of destruction and Sonic reclaims the Master Emerald. But just before he crushes it, seven Chaos Emeralds are released and Sonic transforms into Super Sonic! He defeats Robotnik and retrieves the Emerald from its seven shards; an ending fitting for this animated adventure which was both enjoyable and clever.
Characters
After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is determined to prove himself a hero. He teams up with Tails and sets out on an epic journey around the world in search of an emerald that holds the power to destroy civilizations.
Sonic 2 introduces two new characters to its usual cast of heroes. Tom (Ben Schwartz), a sheriff in Green Hills who grew up idolizing Sonic, joins his family’s legacy in law enforcement; yet they aspire for more.
Second, Maddie (Tika Sumpter), a veterinarian with an amicable relationship with Sonic, has some sexual issues with her sister Rachel (Natasha Rothwell), and both oppose Maddie’s marriage to Tom.
It can be challenging for characters to get along, which in turn creates tension between them. But the film manages to overcome this hurdle by making its human characters work harmoniously within their animal antics.
Soundtrack
Sonic 2’s soundtrack was composed by Masato Nakamura, who previously composed the music for both Sonic games. He is renowned for his brilliant sense of melody and ability to maximize every note possible within 30-40 second loops – an accomplishment unrivaled in modern musical technology.
The soundtrack consists of three discs, featuring music from each level in the game as well as some extra tracks. Disc one contains all of the main stage tunes while disc two and disc three contain boss battle themes and jingles.
The standout track in each level is “White Space Medley”, which contains a medley of all songs played when selecting white space areas. The music is upbeat and uptempo, mostly string-based, with excellent flow throughout the track.
Graphics
Sonic 2 is an impressive sequel to the original Sonic game, taking the series’ formula and making it better than ever. The levels are larger, more intricate, and the gameplay offers greater variety.
Sonic the Hedgehog’s Adventure includes new elements such as Knuckles the Echidna and multiplayer mode, which lets gamers team up with Sonic’s two-tailed sidekick Tails or take on the game in split-screen competitive mode.
However, there are some minor visual glitches which prevent Sonic from performing his usual superspeed moves. For instance, the Aquatic Ruins Zone can be quite challenging to traverse due to enemies that emerge from walls or block the path.
Sonic 2 can often be difficult to see his path, which can be frustrating. Furthermore, there is an absence of background details and graphics that are not as smooth as Sonic 1, plus there’s a noticeable slowdown. Despite these drawbacks, Sonic 2 remains one of the most enjoyable Sonic games and widely considered its best installment.
