The 2020 Academy Awards were held on Sunday night, and filmmaker Bong Joon-Parasite Ho’s was the main winner on an evening dedicated to honoring the brightest and best cinematic achievements of the previous year.
Bong’s dark thriller took up four awards, including the night’s top accolade, Best Picture. As a result, it has become the first International Motion Picture to win an Oscar in the 92-year history of the Academy Awards.
Only ten non-English-language movies had ever been shortlisted for the prestigious title prior to t In the meantime, the finalists in the four acting categories — Brad Pitt for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Laura Dern for Marriage Story, Joaquin Phoenix (Lead Actor for Joker, & Reneé Zellweger for Judy — maintained their position & walked away with the awards.
1917 won three of the ten categories it was shortlisted for: Cinematography, Sound Editing, & Special Effects. It was a strong contender for Best Picture coming into the awards.
With 11 nominations, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker took home two awards: Original Score & Lead Actor.
